Longtime Tampa resident Andrea Sugden serves as a senior vice president for the Switzerland-based recruitment firm Adecco. A graduate of the University of Tampa with a BS in finance and management, Andrea Sugden defies conventional wisdom, supported by research conducted at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL), correlating professional achievement with not remaining so local.
Based on a national sample of married and single adults aged 25 and older from data mined from the US Census and National Survey of Family Health, the WUSTL study determined that for couples without college degrees, 19% live more than 30 miles from each mother and 50% live within 30 miles of each mother. The situation for couples consisting of individuals who have at least one college degree apiece is reversed; about 50% live more than 30 miles from each mother and only 18% live within 30 miles of each mother. A greater likelihood of working in a different place with greater potential for professional achievement after college graduation is thought to account for the difference between these groups.
